Consultations

What to Expect

Mr Gillett understands your concerns about your health, and he will do his best to make you feel at ease. Your initial appointment with Mr Gillett will last about 30 minutes and during this time he will take a thorough history and undertake a clinical examination. The examination will vary according to the nature of your consultation and certain specialized investigations may be performed.

Because of the high standard of equipment available at the clinic, a thorough assessment can usually be achieved in this initial appointment, limiting the need for follow up appointments.

Special investigations performed at the time of the appointment may include an audiogram or tympanometry, ear microscopy or ear suction, rigid or flexible nasal or laryngopharyngeal endoscopy. All are undertaken by Mr Gillett himself.
Sometimes further tests are necessary, such as x-rays, blood tests, MRI scans, CT scans, Ultrasound scans or allergy testing. The majority of tests are performed on site and can usually be performed within 24 hours.

For complex balance assessments (which may take up to three hours to perform) or complex audiology tests, further arrangements will be made.

Please note that hearing tests on children aged 4 or under are not usually possible at the Clinic, and children of this age seeing Mr Gillett are referred to a Paediatric Audiologist for a hearing test.

Results of most tests are available within 48 hours and follow up appointments are arranged accordingly.

Follow up appointments are tailored to clinical need and will vary in length. In the interests of the patient we aim to complete treatment as quickly as possible and in the fewest sessions possible.

Hearing Tests: Audiometry and Tympanometry

Pure Tone Audiometry is the standard assessment of hearing.

This is performed in a sound proofed booth on calibrated instrumentation.

Tympanometry is a measure of middle ear function and frequently helps diagnosis.

This is a quick and painless investigation and may also be performed.

Microsuction and Aural Toilet

This involves the cleaning of the ear under the microscope, usually with a small sucker to remove wax and debris.

This allows a clearer view of the eardrum and aids in diagnosis. It is also frequently therapeutic.

The safe and effective performance of this procedure needs many of the skills required for microsurgery of the ear.

Mr Gillett has performed this on many thousands of patients.

Endoscopy

Mr Gillett is able to perform outpatient endoscopy. This is either endoscopy of the nose using rigid nasal endoscopes, or flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy. Rigid nasal endoscopy affords a good view of the nasal cavity and the back of the nose. It also allows a view of the sinus openings into the nasal cavity which aids in the diagnosis of sinusitis and other sinus problems.

Flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy allows a view of the throat and voice box (larynx) as well as a view of the nasal cavity. Mr Gillett will decide in discussion with you, the most appropriate way of examining your upper airways. Preparation of the airways may include the use of decongestant spray and a local anaesthetic.

Investigations

Further tests may be necessary.
Blood tests are usually performed within the Private Hospital.
Microbiological tests are taken by Mr Gillett and are analysed locally.
Ultrasound, CT and MRI scans are performed if necessary.

Complex Audiology Investigations may take up to 3 hours to complete and will be arranged with the local audiologist for a time and date convenient for you.
We recommend that young children’s hearing tests (4 years and below) are performed by a specialist Paediatric Audiologist. This ensures the most accurate assessment of a young child’s hearing, often through the use of specialist play equipment. Sometimes this can be performed prior to seeing Mr Gillett.
Mr Gillett will discuss the results of all investigations performed with the relevant technician or specialist to ensure that the information is accurate and applicable to each individual.
